My favorite time of the year is summer. This time of year means a lot more time spent with the horses. Unfortunately, I spent a lot of time treating and worrying about cracked hooves.
A year ago (October) I put all my horses on ABC’s Fortified pellets and they had free access to the Stress Free items. I was amazed when springtime came and their hooves were easier to trim and file. Then the summertime came and I did not have a single cracked hoof amongst my four horses. What a pleasure this was to enjoy riding and not worrying if I would be complicating their hooves.
This winter I have noticed they appear to be less dull in appearance and still no cracks.
They are still getting ABC’s Fortified twice a day as recommended and free choice of Rush Creek.

Jim-Thought I would forward you an email I sent to the Whole Dog Journal in response to an article they had on arthritis remedies. I hope you will respond to them as well!

Dear WDJ,

It was interesting to read your article on arthritis remedies (WDJ April 1999) as I have been researching and experimenting with multiple remedies for my animals over the past six years. However, based on my personal experience, I must disagree that the focus should be on the quantity and purity of the GAGs in the product you are purchasing. I tried the pure forms of chondroitin sulfate (CS) and glucosamine on a chronically arthritic horse and saw no improvement. Further research led me to learn that these substances, expecially CS, are difficult to be absorbed by the intestinal tract. No matter how high the quantity or purity, if it isn't able to be absorbed, all your money and effort is going straight into the pooper scooper! It is ironic that the product I have obtained the most results from is Joint Jolt. The product the writer blasted for not indicating the quantity of CS. The manufacturer has (correctly) created an array of ingredients that compliment each other and work together to increase the chances of absorption and beneficial effects on all systems that stimulate healthy cartilage. This seems to be a more appropriate attitude for holistic healing, rather than looking for the silver bullet as with conventional drug therapies. Treat the whole animal, not just the disease!
